BMW contemplating launching bikes in India!

BMW India is contemplating on whether or not to bring back its motorcycles into India and is likely to take a decision on this, by the year end.

Speaking to the media, BMW India’s President, Andreas Schaaf said, “It’s pretty evident the company is interested in getting the bikes here. We are actively looking into it. We will be able to take a decision on the same before the end of the year, may be in a few weeks. There is no risk exposure as such (whether the bikes would succeed or not). It would be done with a long-term perspective. The launch will certainly help the reputation of the BMW brand.”

While there are already several motorcycle manufacturers like Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki etc. who are selling imported motorcycles costing 10 lakh rupees and more in India, decision is particularly hard for BMW, as they had already burned their fingers once in the 90s, by bringing in BMW F650 into the country, which then had to be sold at throwaway price, due to poor response at that time.

Even though the market for imported motorcycles is quite small in India and BMW products normally cost a premium over their Japanese counterparts, we feel that BMW should decide in favor of bringing its motorcycles in India and maybe even think of the CKD route to undercut other manufacturers and leverage its existing operations.
