2010 Mugello MotoGP results

Rarely does one finds several riders wishing another rider speedy recovery during interviews before the start of a race and even rarer still is a sight of fans from a competing team (Ducati), holding up their place cards to spell the name of a rider, which more often than not, dashes their hope of a podium finish! However this is exactly what happened at Mugello GP yesterday, as riders and spectators alike, wished Valentino Rossi a speedy recovery after he underwent operation, following a crash at Mugello during practice session.

This crash has meant that Rossi is effectively out of 2010 MotoGP Championship running, as he would be missing out on quite a few of the upcoming races due to leg injury and had to contend with watching Mugello GP on TV, like us mere mortals. In fact this was the first time Rossi has not started a race since he began his illustrious career over fourteen years ago in Malaysia at the age of 16, and currently holds the record of 230 consecutive starts!

Coming back to the race, it was quite an interesting start with almost all riders pumped for action, as if believing that with Rossi gone, they too have a shot at the championship. However it was Rossi’s teammate, Lorenzo, who initially took the lead. But soon realised that he was not able to keep yesterday’s blistering pace and quickly lost ground to fellow Spaniard as he became embroiled in a fight with Andrea Dovizioso.

Dovizioso passed Lorenzo on lap three, only to be over taken by Lorenzo three laps later, the pair then remaining locked closely together until three-quarter of the race distance, when Lorenzo managed to stretch his lead to over half a second. By then Pedrosa was several seconds ahead and went on to win the Mugello GP.

When it came time for the podium, Lorenzo wore Rossi’s yellow number 46 shirt to show his respect to his teammate and fellow rider, who until a few days ago, was locked in a fierce battle with him for the first place!
